Frederick Leonard King

Born in 1890, he enlisted as a Regular soldier in the 2nd Battalion DLI in 1908. He served with the 1st Battalion DLI in India during the Great War and also in the 3rd Afghan War in 1919. In 1923, as a Sergeant, he joined the 6th (Territorial) Battalion DLI's Permanent Staff at Bishop Auckland. He finally retired in 1931 after 23 years service, as a Colour Sergeant, and opened a cafe in Catterick. In August 1940, aged 50, he re-enlisted and served with the Royal Engineers in the Middle East. Frederick King, who was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, died at Catterick in 1953, having served 28 years in the British Army.
